The Challenge

The fitness app market is crowded with generic apps that track calories or workouts in isolation — but serious fitness enthusiasts and their coaches need both, integrated, with the intelligence to adapt plans based on progress. The client wanted to build a subscription fitness and nutrition platform that coaches could use to manage their clients remotely. The core product problems were: how to make daily food logging fast enough that users actually do it (barcode scanning was non-negotiable), how to personalize workout and nutrition plans per user rather than giving everyone the same program, how to visualize progress in a way that keeps users motivated through plateaus, and how to give coaches a scalable way to manage multiple clients without individual check-in calls. The app had to run natively on both iOS and Android from a single codebase to hit budget.

Our Solution

We built Somatic Fitness using React Native, giving the client a single codebase that compiles to native performance on both iOS and Android — no separate native builds required. Food logging uses a built-in barcode scanner that pulls nutritional data from a comprehensive food database instantly — logging a meal takes seconds rather than minutes. The personalized plan engine generates workout and nutrition programs based on each user's goals, current fitness level, available equipment, and dietary requirements — coaches can override and customize any element. Macro and calorie tracking with daily and weekly visual analytics give users clear feedback on adherence and progress. Progress charts show body weight, measurements, and performance metrics over time, providing the visual motivation that keeps users subscribed. Stripe subscription billing handles plan tiers, trials, and renewals. The coach dashboard gives trainers a client list view with each client's adherence rate, plan progress, and recent activity — making remote coaching scalable without individual daily check-ins.
